  Coaster 1.1.3

Description

Coaster 1.1.3 is a freeware Direct-to-Disk Audio Recording Software for PowerMac computers.

It creates files in uncompressed AIFF format, suitable for processing in Sample Editing Software or burning Audio CDs using e.g. Discribe or Toast.

Features

  • Accurate level display in db.
  • Catches EVERY clipping that occurs (even in background) by not relying on the Toolbox functions for determining the input signal level, but by scanning the complete input signal that gets written to disk.
  • Can record in background extremely well by using variable-sized record buffers.
  • Provides Headroom display.
  • Sound feedback for clipping. New clipping shuts up playing sound and is not scheduled AFTER a currently playing sound.
  • Records all settings in the application's Preferences file.
  • Restores Sound Input Device settings to original values when closing the Recording Window or quitting.
  • Automatically splits up recordings into several files during recording if level drops below specified level for a certain duration. Also has adjustable prerecord feature on resuming the recording.
  • You can manually split files in realtime during recording without losing a single sample.
  • Eliminates clicks at the beginning and ending of recordings by searching zero crossings (independently for left and right channels).
  • Invert signal phase on single channels
  • Supports Gain and Stereo-Gain setting on Macs supporting that feature.
  • Balloon Help in all Dialogs and Menus
  • Rudimentary AppleScript support (incl. a "Timer Recording" sample AppleScript)
  • Save and restore complete recording settings to and from files
  • Freeware :-)

System requirements

To run Coaster, you'll need:

  • a PowerMacintosh
  • Mac OS 8 or later (incl. Mac OS 9; Mac OS X is NOT supported!)
  • colour display (min. 256 colours) or grayscale display (min. 16 grays)
  • screen size at least 640x480 pixels
  • Sound Manager 3.0 or later (i.e. QuickTime 3.0 or later)
  • Sound Input Device capable of asynchronous operation (most Macs come standard with sound input capabilities, but not all allow asynchronous recording)
  • a hard disk that's fast enough to capture the audio data
  • 13 MB of free RAM

Coaster supports Navigation Services, Drag & Drop and Balloon Help and is Appearance Manager savvy.

A cool, updated timer recording script by Roger Wilmut:

"The script is now protected against restarts, which means you can set the Energy Control Panel to switch the computer on shortly before the recording is due to start."

updated: 2005-09-06: now also runs on Mac OS 9.2.2

Thanks for the kind submission and update, Roger!
